Wild Oasis

Commercial space

The Wild Island Cultural & Life Community in Huizhou originated from the former Dongjiang Rice Winery, established in 1951. Over seventy years, the site has accumulated rich industrial and urban history. Guided by the principle of "respecting the original and blending old with new," BDSD Boundless Design transformed this abandoned industrial area into a vibrant public space through the renewal of its public gardens.

The design preserves the site's natural and architectural heritage. The old chimney, a visual and spiritual landmark, is connected to the surroundings via layered staircases, linking history with the present. Original materials like bricks and wine vats were repurposed—the vats, painted white and weathered, now serve as planters, creating subtle ink-wash shadows as vegetation grows inside.

Landscaping follows natural growth patterns: green foxtail sways in the wind, old trees merge with structures, and weeds emerge from pavement cracks, illustrating the dialogue between time and life. Red brick paving even incorporates Morse code messages, adding a layer of interaction between visitors and the space.

Avoiding artificial ornamentation, the design builds on temporal and human narratives. Stairs, terraces, and gardens flow seamlessly, guiding visitors through layered experiences of light, wind, and texture. Wild Island is not just a renewed landscape—it is a revived urban memory. By allowing the space to evolve naturally, BDSD returns it to the people and to time, blending heritage, nature, and modern life.
